Half-Life: Resonance

Friday February 21, 2003:

Gordon phoned me up this afternoon and asked me to swing by his dorm to tell me something. I’ll admit, I was more curious to see what Casa del Freeman looked like, so I hustled over there.

Freeman’s room was much tidier than mine, with too many books jostling for space on the shelf, and that famous picture of Einstein with his tongue sticking out on the wall.

“Welcome to MTV’s Cribs,” I said, “And the home of Black Mesa’s Most Eligible Bachelor.”

Freeman showed me the vent plans I’d given him, which he’d spread out on his desk.

“Check this out,” he said. “I was looking at the plans for the vent system in Sector C, and it turns out you can get to Dr Kleiner’s lab from any place in Anomalous Materials. From almost anywhere in the facility in fact.”

“Get outta here,” I said.

But when I peered at the schematic, goddamn it if Freeman wasn’t right after all.

“So much for tight security,” I said. “Anyone can break in anywhere.”

“Well I was thinking,” said Gordon, “Next time Dr Kleiner locks himself out, I’ll race you there.”

“What?” I laughed, “A vent maze race?”

“Why not?” he said, “Whoever gets there first owes the other guy a beer.”

Now, I already owed Gordon a beer, but I was pretty confident that I could beat him. I’ve wriggled through those vents half a dozen times now.

“You’re on Freeman,” I said, shaking his hand.

And thus, the world-famous Freeman/Calhoun Vent Relay was born.. That takes care of my bar tab at Feynman’s…
